John Leggett studied piano technology with Peter Clark earning the status of registered piano technician (RPT) with the Piano Technicians Guild of America and becoming a member of the Sacramento Valley Chapter. John Leggett also holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music (trombone) from California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) under Dr. Ernie Hills III, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious studies including a one year residency at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, and a Master’s of Music in Choral Conducting under Dr. Donald Kendrick, also at CSUS.
Leggett Piano Service has been providing full-time quality piano service since 2000. It is our mission to provide the very best service at an affordable price to customers in the historic Mother Lode Region. We believe the best way to achieve this goal is to tune customers pianos twice a year. This affords us enough time to evaluate the best course of action with any given piano. For example, some pianos greatly benefit by installing a complete or partial humidity control system, most piano actions need regulating, and voicing the piano keeps it in optimum performance; when the piano reaches tuning stability, it is most often tuned once a year thereafter or once every two years.
Leggett is the founder of the Interfaith Community of Choirs and co-founder of the Amador Children’s Chorus. He is happily married to music educator Kirstin Leggett and the proud father of three children: Ariana, Carlton, and Jonathan.
Leggett has a unique musical background - one suited to the art of piano technology. Leggett started piano tuning on his own using his background in low brass playing in jazz bands, quintets, quartets, chamber groups, marching bands, concert bands, wind ensembles, orchestras, etc.,. He had tuned several pianos before meeting two very important people: Peter Clark and Donald Kendrick. Kendrick would inspire him to study choral tonal color and Clark would build upon Leggett’s rich background in music teaching him piano technology
Kendrick is the Founder/Conductor of the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, the Music Director at Sacred Heart Church where he conducts Schola Cantorum and Vox Nova (Men's Chorus) and the past Founder/Artistic Director of the Sacramento Children's Chorus. He is the California statewide representative for Repertoire and Standards for Community Choruses for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He is considered by many to be one of the finest conductors in his field and his choirs have received numerous awards for tone and presentation. He is a consummate professional, gracious and his musical influence on Leggett was enormous.
Clark, Certified Tuning Examiner and past President of the Piano Technicians Guild Sacramento Valley Chapter is a graduate of San Francisco Conservatory in French Horn. He served on the faculty at CSUS as Horn instructor from 1978 to 1985 and full-time piano technician from 1977 to 2005. Clark is well respected in the Guild for his concert preparation skills and his ability to teach. Founder and owner of Classical West, Inc. Clark has recorded and engineered for pianist Delbert Bump, Thomas Hulse, Sally Christian, and in 2000 Clark was an Emmy nominee for his work with the Sacramento Youth Symphony. Clark is an extremely talented individual - very generous and positive. His understanding of piano technology ranks high in the Guild and he is considered by many to be the finest voicer - or tone regulator on the planet. His musical influence on Leggett continues to be profound.
Leggett’s musical skills come naturally, his Mother Shirley Turner (organ, piano, voice) and his Grandfather Pierce Deasy (piano), and his great-grandmother Mary Chichizola (piano/organ) were all musicians. Leggett received an award from the United States Marines for musical excellence in 1986 in recognition for his trombone playing and leadership in the Jackson High School Band, under the direction of the late Wesley Paul Hill.

Some customer quotes:
Regarding the Ragtime Festival 2008
...The pianos were really good this year, too. Even the small piano in the Ragtime Garden, was better than that old green piano from years past. We nearly fell over when we saw the beautiful grand at the Hanford House (Charles Walter). It's nice to have a surprise like that....
Regarding a restringing, new hammers, and action adjust:
John, I am just thrilled with the piano. You need to bring Kirstin and your mom and dad over to hear it before we leave. Got to get off, but thank you sooo much.
Regarding a recital tuning and preparation:
John, thank you so much! The piano sounded just beautiful for the recital. We had a full house and the parents were so pleased that they are already talking about preparations for the next one!
